The five-year ban imposed on the Attorney General of Imo State, C. O. C. Akaolisa, by the Legal Practitioners Disciplinary Committee, LPDC, has been canceled.
The ban was overturned by the Apex Court following many legal suits challenging the committee’s decision on the suspension of Akolisa.
Recalled that in July 2021, six members of the LPDC panel submitted a report that banned Akaolisa from legal practice for five years over his conduct after being accused of leveraging his position as the Attorney General of Imo State in the First tenure of Senator Hope Uzodimma to secure the release of an alleged murderer who was standing trial.
In a unanimous judgment, the Supreme Court found the decision of the panel committee out of touch with extant legal ground norms. The Supreme Court proceeded to set aside the committee’s ruling.
The leader of the five members Supreme Court panel, Justice Mohammed Baba Idris, said:
“Having considered the arguments presented by counsel, the court found the appeal of the appellant meritorious, and it is hereby allowed.
“The decision of the Legal Practitioners Disciplinary Committee (LPDC) delivered on the 9th of July 2021, finding the appellant liable for infamous conduct and suspending him from legal practice for a period of five years, is hereby set aside.”
