— Okigwe Federal University to Receive Over ₦30 Billion; Imo Light Up, Road Infrastructure, Healthcare, Security Top Agenda
Owerri, Imo State — In a rousing and detailed State of the State Address, Governor Hope Uzodimma of Imo State has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to the prosperity, security, and development of the state. Addressing the Imo State House of Assembly at the Imo Assembly Hall on June 24, 2025, the Governor outlined a comprehensive progress report while receiving unanimous endorsement from lawmakers across party lines.
FEDERAL UNIVERSITY IN OKIGWE: A MAJOR WIN FOR IMO
One of the highlights of the address was the approval of the newly established Federal University in Okigwe, which is set to receive over ₦30 billion for its takeoff. Governor Uzodimma specially commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, for his unwavering support in realizing this monumental project, which is poised to expand access to tertiary education and boost the economy of the region.
LEGISLATIVE SUPPORT AND COLLABORATION
Governor Uzodimma expressed gratitude to the Imo State House of Assembly for their continued cooperation and support, stating:
“Your support has been critical to the achievements we have made. I assure you that we will continue to work together for a better tomorrow.”
Speaker Rt. Hon. Chike Olemgbe pledged the Assembly’s continued support for the Governor’s policies, affirming the Legislature’s commitment to the prosperity of the state.
DEEPENING DEVELOPMENT ACROSS SECTORS
The Governor catalogued achievements across critical sectors:
Education: Imo now boasts more federal schools than ever before, with 305 primary schools renovated—one in each electoral ward.
Civil Service Reforms: A digitized and efficient civil service, described by the Governor as “the best in the country today.”
Infrastructure: More roads have been constructed than under any administration since 1999, linking rural areas to the capital.
Healthcare: The expansion of ImoCare into rural communities ensures affordable, quality care for vulnerable populations.
Sports: Increased investment has resulted in more trophies for Imo State athletes locally and internationally.
Social Welfare and Inclusion: Programs expanded to support persons with disabilities and other vulnerable groups.
Salary Consistency: Timely payments to civil servants and pensioners despite economic challenges.
Public Transport: ISTMA was revamped for better traffic control and public safety.
Agriculture: With a renewed focus on Adapalm and the development of a 400-metric-ton fertilizer plant, agriculture is rebounding.
Environmental Sanitation: Owerri has seen significant improvement, becoming a benchmark for cleanliness.
Land Administration: A Land Commission of Inquiry and an automated management system are addressing land fraud.
Security: With local vigilantes and federal support, the state’s security situation has greatly improved.
Judiciary and Rule of Law: Strong synergy with the judiciary and adherence to the rule of law.
Digital Governance: Transitioning from analogue to digital governance, promising 24-hour service delivery.
Local Government Autonomy: Successful conduct of LG elections with elected chairmen in office.
TINUBU’S POLICIES ENDORSED
Governor Uzodimma credited President Tinubu’s economic reforms—especially the removal of fuel subsidy—for enabling states to pursue independent growth. He highlighted the dredging of the Orashi River as:
“A game-changer for Imo’s economic revolution. It will create new trade routes, attract industry, and generate jobs.”
STRONG LEGISLATIVE ENDORSEMENT
Commendations poured in from lawmakers:
Hon. Onyemechi Anayo (Majority Leader, Member, Representing Owerri-West, applauded the Governor for delivering on world-class projects and extending health insurance to 664 autonomous communities.
Hon. Engr. Bernard Ndubuisi, Member Representing Iheme Mbano State Constituency, praised the state’s improved security and federal engagement.
Deputy Speaker Amara Chyna Anyanwu, Member Representing Nwangele State Constituency, moved a motion of confidence in Governor Uzodimma and President Tinubu as well as endorsement of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for a Second Term—seconded by the Minority Leader, Hon. Prince Udochukwu Amuchi representing Aboh Mbaise State Constituency, and unanimously adopted.
The Clerk of the House, Mrs. Chinelo Adora Emeghara, (Esq), was directed to convey the resolution to President Tinubu.
In his vote of thanks, Deputy Speaker Anyanwu commended the Governor for promoting legislative autonomy and providing funds for constituency projects, stating:
“This Assembly is proud of your leadership.”
