Nigeria and China reaffirmed their deepening strategic ties on Thursday, unveiling a far-reaching development blueprint for Africa at the Second Post-FOCAC Abuja Forum held in the Nigerian capital.
The event focused on accelerating the implementation of the “Ten Partnership Actions” announced at the 2024 Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) Summit in Beijing. These partnerships span infrastructure, trade, green development, healthcare, digital technology, and beyond.
Chinese Ambassador to Nigeria, Yu Dunhai, emphasized that the initiatives represent a shared vision for progress, describing China-Africa ties as a “catalyst for modernisation and a foundation for global equity.”
“In just nine months since the FOCAC Beijing Summit, we’ve made substantial progress,” Dunhai said, pointing to growing mutual trust, deeper cooperation, and aligned multilateral engagement. “China-Africa relations are stable, resilient, and built for the long term.”
He also highlighted key milestones, including:
Launch of a lithium processing plant in Nasarawa State
Revival of the Ajaokuta Steel Plant
Removal of tariffs on exports from 53 African countries, including Nigeria
Dunhai affirmed China’s willingness to negotiate a bilateral Economic Partnership Agreement with Nigeria and praised Abuja’s strong diplomatic stance, including its support for the One-China principle and recent entry into BRICS.
Institutionalising Ties: Nigeria-China Strategic Partnership
Director-General of the newly created Nigeria-China Strategic Partnership (NCSP), Joseph Tegbe, described the development as a “pivot from transactional relations to a long-term, development-driven alliance.”
“Our focus now is institutionalised, coordinated, and strategic,” he said, linking the NCSP’s agenda directly to President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda and China’s Belt and Road Initiative.
