On Tuesday, May 21st, 2024, during a plenary session at the Imo State House of Assembly in Owerri, Hon. Engr. Gilbert Chigozie Nwosu, the representative for Oguta State Constituency, presented a motion calling for the urgent construction of roads leading to Agwa Communities, Oguta Naval Base, Eziorsu, Ugada-Ubi, Opuoma, and Egbema Road in Oguta and Ohaji/Egbema Local Government Areas.
The motion aims to bolster socioeconomic development in these regions.
Hon. Nwosu highlighted the severe challenges faced by residents due to the deplorable condition of the economic roads connecting their communities to other parts of the state.
He emphasized that the road networks leading to Agwa Communities, including Amakaohia-Ubi, Ndegwu, Irete (in Owerri West LGA) to Owerri, as well as routes to Obudi, Obokofia, and Ejemekwuru, (in Oguta LGA) are in a dire state of disrepair.
These roads are critical for the predominantly farming communities, who rely on them to transport their agricultural produce to markets.
The lawmaker from Oguta stressed that the inhabitants of Eziorsu and Ugada-Ubi can hardly transport their harvested crops to market due to the poor road conditions.
This situation exacerbates economic hardship, impedes security measures, and perpetuates poverty within these communities.
Hon. Nwosu urged the Honourable House to call on the Executive Governor of Imo State, Sen. Hope Uzodimma, to direct the Ministry of Works, the Imo State Oil Producing Area Development Commission (ISOPADEC), and all relevant oil companies, including Sterling Global, Agip, Shell BP, ANTAN, and SEPLAT, to urgently address and construct these essential roadways.
The proposed construction includes roads leading to Irete, Ndegwu, Amakaohia-Ubi, Obudi, Obokofia, Ejemekwuru, Oguta Naval Base, Eziorsu, Ugada-Ubi, and Opuoma Egbema.
The motion, co-sponsored by seven Imo lawmakers, including: Hon. Kanayo Onyemaechi, Hon. Uzoma Osuoha, Hon. Kennedy Ibeh, Hon. Ikenna Ihezuo, Hon. Dominic Ezerioha, Hon. Henry Agbasonu, and Hon. James Ubah Esile, received significant support.
Hon. Nwosu expressed profound dissatisfaction with the current state of the roads and underscored their importance in connecting three Local Government Areas: Owerri West, Oguta, and Ohaji/Egbema.
In his address, Hon. Nwosu appealed to Governor Uzodimma for the immediate consideration and implementation of his motion, emphasizing the critical need for these road constructions to stimulate rapid economic development and improve the quality of life for the affected communities.
