Benin City, June 24, 2025 — The Edo State House of Assembly has given its unanimous approval for a N100 billion loan request by Governor Monday Okpebholo, aimed at driving infrastructural development across the state.
The approval came during Tuesday’s plenary session following a formal letter from the governor, addressed to Speaker Rt. Hon. Blessing Agbebaku. The correspondence, signed by the Secretary to the State Government, Mr. Umar Ikhilor, detailed the terms of the loan, describing it as a contractual facility to be secured from First Bank Nigeria Plc.
According to the letter titled “Request for Legislative Approval of N100 Billion,” the loan is intended to enhance contractors’ financing for various infrastructural projects spread across Edo State.
During the Committee of the Whole, lawmakers threw their full weight behind the proposal, emphasizing the urgent need to complete numerous ongoing infrastructure projects critical to the state’s development agenda.
Speaker Agbebaku subsequently directed the Clerk of the House, Mr. Yahaya Omognai, to transmit clean copies of the resolution to Governor Okpebholo for prompt execution.
In a related development, the House also passed a bill establishing St. Matthew Royal College of Nursing Science, to be situated in Edenu-Irrua, a move expected to boost healthcare education and workforce development in the region.
