Students, Alumni Reject Makinde’s Move to Rename Institution After Late Gov. Olunloyo

Students and alumni of The Polytechnic, Ibadan, have vehemently opposed the renaming of the iconic institution by Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde. The governor announced the change to honour the late Omololu Olunloyo, the school’s first rector and former governor of the state.
However, the Students Union Government (SUG) and alumni groups say the name change undermines the institution’s over 50-year legacy and global recognition.
“We strongly believe this decision is unjustifiable and disregards our rich heritage,” said SUG President Oladipupo Olamide.
Echoing this sentiment, alumni leader Yomi Akande stressed that while Olunloyo is a respected figure, renaming the school adds no tangible value.
Calls for a reversal have intensified, with stakeholders requesting a constructive dialogue on the issue.
