“I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing; therefore choose life, that both thou and thy seed may live.” — Deut. 30:19

Nature is full of colors, each with its own significance and beauty. Just as a skilled photographer selects the perfect background to enhance the subject of their photo, you can carefully choose the background color of your life to make yourself stand out clearly and brightly. Your life can be colored in many ways, but the background you choose to blend with it will determine your destiny.

As you pursue your goals, various events may color your life differently from what you had planned. Circumstances beyond your control may dictate what you experience, but you can choose how you respond to them.

Disabilities can color our lives in different ways—be it sickness, financial setbacks, disappointments, or the loss of loved ones. Job lost all he had, including his children and property, but he chose to worship God and maintained his righteousness (Job 1:20-22). When Paul and Silas were imprisoned in Philippi and their backs were raw from beatings, they sang hymns (Acts 16:23-25). They chose the bright color of praise instead of the dark colors of depression, bitterness, and despair. Because of this, when they were miraculously released, they could continue their mission joyfully. If you decide not to despair in the face of obstacles, your journey to success will be less turbulent.

For a butterfly to emerge with beautiful colors, it must go through metamorphosis. The success stories of Abraham Lincoln and the unschooled Thomas Edison, who never gave up on their quests for political office and the invention of the electric bulb despite numerous failures, should inspire us to choose our own colors.

It is important to struggle through to success joyfully, for the joy derived from worthwhile struggle far outweighs the joy obtained after victory is won. Choose to put on a color that allows you to shine despite what is happening inside you. Keep in mind that most problems can be solved, and sooner or later, yours will be solved as well.

Every time you solve a problem, you learn from it. You also learn by helping others solve their problems. Learning to solve problems is a competency you will continue to develop as you grow in maturity and experience. You may face the world’s most difficult problems, but there is no prize for letting the problem cloud your life. What matters is that you remain calm while sorting out the problems. Do not become excessively anxious, which might create another problem for you to solve. Dealing directly with difficult problems is not always easy, and sometimes there are no simple solutions. But if you are unable to solve the problems facing you, ask for help. Help comes to those genuinely in need and unashamed to ask for it from those capable of providing it.

When you know the combination of colors that are best for you, you are more likely to make the best choices. Education, training, and experience can prepare you to make important choices and decisions in your life. But even so, the journey to any truly worthy goal is rarely without mishaps. Therefore, be prepared to confront problems without being discouraged.

Choose your own color—what you want, and you will have it, for you are a creature of choice, and your destiny depends on it.
